Out of Network Solutions

Clients may still be able to get reimbursed for their sessions through out-of-network benefits. Here's how:

  • Log in to your insurance provider's portal or use the mobile app.
  • Upload the superbill or fill out a claim form.
  • Some insurers require mailing or faxing the superbill.

3. Submit the superbill to your insurance

A superbill is an itemized receipt that includes:
  • Therapist's name, credentials, and license number.
  • Date and duration of the session.
  • Diagnosis code (if required).
  • CPT (procedure) code for the session.
  • Session fee.
Your therapist should provide this upon request.

2. Ask your therapist for a superbill

Call your insurance provider and ask:
  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?
  • Is there a deductible I must meet first?
  • Do I need prior authorization or a referral?
  • How do I submit claims for reimbursement?

1. Check Insurance Benefits

  • If approved, you'll receive a check or direct deposit for a portion of what you paid.
  • If denied, you can file an appeal or ask your therapist for help adjusting documentation.

4. wait for reimbursement

benefits of out of network

Insurance companies require therapists to submit clinical notes and treatment plans, which can compromise client confidentiality. Some therapists prefer to keep therapy entirely private.

3. confidentiality concerns

To get insurance coverage, therapists often need to diagnose clients with a mental health disorder. Some therapists prefer not to label clients or may work with individuals who do not meet insurance criteria for a diagnosis.

2. Diagnostic requirements

Insurance companies may restrict how many sessions a client can have or impose time limits on therapy, which may not align with the therapist's clinical judgment for effective therapy

1. limited session length & frequency

Being out-of-network allows therapists to set their own rates, determine their schedules, and use treatment methods without insurance-imposed limitations.

4. More control
